From Tom McAvoy, Hickory Hills:

FOR COOK COUNTY COMMISSIONER – 6TH DISTRICT: (NORTH of 87TH Street)

William Moran was a County Commissioner for this district many years ago.  Michael Hawkins is a perennial candidate.  While I have nothing negative to say about either of them, I was intrigued by the responses of Sandra K. Czyznikiewicz on the Tribune Editorial Board questionnaire. (Hawkins did not respond to the Trib questionnaire and Moran was vague and didn’t answer all the questions.) So, on a hunch, I just called her on the telephone. I talked to her for about a half an hour and she was very down-to-earth and thoughtful. I came away favorably impressed. (If you know me, you’ll know that I’m not easily impressed by most politicians or candidates.)  This is an uphill race for any Republican candidate.  But, if I resided north of 87th Street in her district, I’d vote for her.  More info on Sandi at her website: www.sandi4cook.com.

We have been hearing talk of transparency in government for some time now, and while some steps have been taken, it is far from good enough.  Even if complete transparency is acheived, I say that's not enough.  When money is being spent irresponsibly, it doesn't matter if we see every dollar spent after the fact.

What is needed in Cook County is fiscal responsibility first!  We need elected officials who ensure that your money is being spent wisely to begin with.

I will be the voice of reason for the 6th District.  I will scrutinize every dollar that is being spent.   If it is not beneficial for the taxpayers of this district, it will not be approved by me.

Not only will I not accept any contingcy funds, I will immediately call for a repeal of the ordinance that allows this unnecessary expenditure.

I will propose a 15% reduction in the starting pay for the Cook County Commissioners to begin immediately.

I will propose an ordinance prohibiting pay raises for any elected county official at any time there are lay-offs in any county department.  It makes no sense to increase the pay of elected officials when county employees are being laid off.

And speaking of county employees, I will fight to ensure the hiring process in this county is improved and unbiased.  Plain and simple, the applicants with the best skills, knowledge and abilities will be hired.  I want an impartial system of hiring that would prevent friends and family from receiving preferential treatment.

This is just the beginning.  As your commissioner, I assure you, there is so much we can do together. This is YOUR district.  Help me become YOUR voice!

After voting to roll back the tax earlier this year, Commissioner Deborah Sims did an about-face after Stroger vetoed the measure. Likewise, Commissioner Joan Murphy was a co-sponsor of the most recent rollback measure, but turned around and voted against it.

Switching sides?
But two -- Robert Steele and Joan Murphy -- didn't realize the cuts they were endorsing affected some of their own relatives, and Murphy said she might reconsider.

Commissioner Joan Murphy, a South Suburban Democrat, voted against the ban saying it stands in the way of creating jobs.

"I was banking on the Olympics, I thought if we get this, this would be the shot in the arm our region needed. When that didn’t happen I thought we needed something where we could put people back to work. There’s not much on the horizon out there."
